Bucyrus District and Curriculum
Bucyrus City Schools is responsible for the education of public school students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade. The overarching mission of the school district is to promote a love of lifelong learning. This mission is accomplished by offering students various methods of gaining valuable knowledge and skills. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bucyrus District Curriculum
An essential part of the Bucyrus math curriculum is the foundational concepts that children learn in elementary school. Children learn to count, name numbers accurately, and compare numbers in terms of their value. Addition and subtraction are also explored, and in later elementary grades, multiplication and division are studied. Principles of measurement and data collection are also covered in elementary school. Students learn how to describe measurable attributes, such as value, as well as how to compare those attributes. Basic geometry is introduced as well, with children gaining an understanding of how to create, compare, and analyze shapes.
The Bucyrus physical education curriculum prepares students to lead a physically fit and healthy lifestyle. In high school, students acquire the ability to successfully perform a variety of complex physical movements that are necessary for physical fitness. Learners explore various games, sports, and exercise regimens that they can incorporate into their fitness routine in order to maximize their physical fitness. Students learn about proper stretching, warm up, and cool down techniques that reduce the risk of injury. Nutrition is a topic of study as well.

- District Strives to Promote 21st Century Education - Bucyrus City Schools has adopted a framework of instruction that emphasizes the development of college and career ready skills. Students begin to explore career paths as early as third grade, which allows them to identify areas of interest they can explore in middle school and high school.
- Science Club Helps Red Cross - The Bucyrus High School Science Club recently held a blood drive in the middle school gymnasium. The purpose of the drive was to deliver blood donations to the Red Cross to help increase the supply and model to students an important community service.
- Gifted and ESL Programming Seeks to Meet Student Needs - Children with exceptional needs can receive supplemental services in Bucyrus through the district’s Special Programs Department. Gifted programming offers highly rigorous activities for children with giftedness, while ESL programs offer language learning to students whose native language is not English.

Chalk Talk: Reading Components
When talking about reading, parents and students can become lost in the terminology. Here is a brief explanation of some of the phrases. Phonemic awareness involves the child’s ability to recognize and use sounds to create words. Then when a child is expected to understand the way a letter sounds and identifying the letter the teacher will be talking about phonics. This skill helps the child build sight words and to decode new words. Reading fluency is how quickly and accurately a child understands what is read. Each of these help with a child’s vocabulary development which is the child’s learning the meaning and pronunciation of words. Finally reading comprehension strategies are those ideas that help the child to understand, remember and communicate the reading. Now the parent can talk with the teacher about each of these with a foundation to draw on.
