Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burlington District Curriculum

In order to prepare students to be independent thinkers, problem solvers, informed citizens and qualified workers, the City of Burlington Public Schools has devised a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that focuses on academic, career, social and emotional skills. Students engage in a variety of learning activities, ranging from classroom learning to experiential exercises in the community. Highly qualified teachers provide challenging instruction based on the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

The visual and performing arts curriculum includes an examination of the history of arts and culture. Students identify common themes in artistic productions and examine the ways in which those themes can be represented in dance, theater, music and visual art. Students analyze innovations in art and the impact that innovation has had on the expression of art over the course of history. Students describe how culture impacts art and how art impacts culture as well. These cultural influences are examined for countries around the globe and for civilizations throughout time.

Early childhood education promotes social development as well. From learning to share to learning to wait their turn to speak, children learn valuable lessons about what it means to interact with others in a positive manner and fosters a sense of security and belonging. Students also gain valuable skills that help regulate emotions and promote independence. By developing these skills, children enter the K-12 system ready to learn, ready to interact with their peers and prepared to be a positive member of their learning community.
