Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Byram District Curriculum

In Byram Township Schools, parents, teachers, and community members work together to ensure the alignment of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJ CCCS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics and Language Arts. Students are assessed in Grades 3-8 in language arts and math, and in Grades 4-8 in science using the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge, or NJASK.

The NJ ASK is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New Jersey. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level. Byram recognizes that each child learns differently and promotes the physical development and emotional well-being of all students by developing their self-esteem and interpersonal skills. Furthermore, the Parent Teacher Organization supports a multitude of student activities that support development, such as after-school enrichment classes, field trips, technology equipment, and cultural arts programs.

Chalk Talk: Developing Money Sense

We can all agree that the modern-day economic pressures have impacted the decisions we make on a daily basis. If you’re raising a family, there is no doubt that your children have noticed the changes as well. Why not play into your child’s curiosity by using it as an opportunity to teach them a little fiscal responsibility? With younger children, start by teaching them the names of the coins and explaining that every little bit adds up to a larger whole. As they get older and start earning allowance or a paycheck, teach your children to make thoughtful decisions by monitoring the amount they store away before making a purchase. Go further by teaching them to plan for bigger purchases farther ahead and make daily and weekly decisions to help him reach that goal. Money is also a great motivator to develop math skills, so encourage your children to use what they’re learning in class to make their dollars go farther.
