Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canfield District Curriculum

In Math, skills are made up of knowledge (adaptive and perceptive), showing proficiency in a multitude of ways to solve difficult problems, understanding various theories (concepts, processes, and associations), showing fluency in measured procedures (skills in the transmission of knowledge through certain mathematical procedures), and life-long thinking habits (the way of seeing math as being purposeful and worthwhile in life). These skills provide the range of problem-solving methods a student needs to approach the various topics they learn in mathematics.

The technology curriculum introduces students to many technologies they will use in daily life. Technology’s role in communication is also explored, allowing students to harness the power of social media and other emerging technologies to learn from and interact with diverse peoples from around the globe. Safely using technology is an important topic of study as well. Students learn about digital ethics and become aware of strategies they can use to protect their privacy while using technology.

Chalk Talk: Talking with the Teacher

Whether it is parent-teacher conference time or there is a need to see the teacher for concerns knowing how to approach and guide the conversation is beneficial. When discussing the concern make sure that it is in a private setting, away from staff, parents and kids. Instead, ask for a conference or the opportunity to exchange emails. During the meeting, keep a positive outlook. This makes it easier for the teacher to be willing to hear the parents’ thoughts. To go along with this, parents need to avoid “you” statements which can sound combative. Parents should also state the facts, even if this means writing notes with dates and times. Parents should avoid using labels, such a bully or worse. Instead it is more helpful if behaviors are addressed. Finally, try to sandwich the matter with positives to help make it easy to maintain a relationship with the teacher.
