Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canton District Curriculum

The Language Arts program begins with the basics of teaching children how to read: left-to-right, top-to-bottom. It then helps them to find the primary features of sentences like capital letters and ending punctuation. As the children move into the upper elementary grades they learn the meaning of prefixes and suffixes and how they are used. Then they focus on the actual reading. By the end of high school students can compare authors’ views on the same topic, they can find inferences, and draw conclusions.

Mathematics is taught from the beginning of a child’s education by associating addition with adding visual items together. This is then extended to multiplication, so children can see that it is repeated addition. By enabling the students to see the equations visually it helps them to make the transition to word problems as they get a little older. When they are in middle school they are able to work with more abstract ideas, such as they will find in algebra, so when they are in high school they can solve problems in calculus, trigonometry, or geometry.

Chalk Talk: Writing a Personal Statement on a College Application

College applications can be daunting with all the information that is required, however, when it comes to writing a personal statement some minds go blank. The personal statement gives the university a face to go with the academic records and grades. Some of them have a set of questions for the student to answer; others want the applicant to write a brief paragraph about themselves. When writing about skills or talent, be straight forward. Try not to make them sound grander than they are. Also try to show the connection between accomplishments and what the school has to offer. Finally, make sure to draft and redraft the statement before finalizing the product.
