Cape Girardeau District and Curriculum

Cape Girardeau Public Schools use the hands-on Missouri state curriculum in addition to the nationally acclaimed Common Core Standards. Together, these curricula strive to promote a comprehensive and supportive learning environment for all students. Professional development and curriculum coaching allows the knowledge strands to be flexible but linear in the progression of student knowledge. College and workplace readiness is a key hallmark of the subject matter strands, tying student interests and goals with a multifaceted knowledge base.

We currently cover the following Cape Girardeau-area school district: Cape Girardeau Public School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cape Girardeau District Curriculum

Cape Girardeau Public School District uses a wide variety of objectives, coaching tools and assessments to ensure students are learning at the top of their game. The applicability of scientific knowledge to a wide variety of subjects is emphasized throughout the grade levels, as is the necessity of science communication skills. The nature of matter and energy, structures of living ecosystems and organisms, and the process of scientific inquiry are reinforced, helping students to progress to the upper grades with a solid foundation in scientific thinking.

The Language Arts program emphasizes the ability to create a well-constructed thesis and argue its defense with evidence. Informative texts and imaginative writing help students deconstruct complex information and think broadly about their own creative process. Research, revision and reflection are hallmarks of writing and reading skills, from early grades on toward high school, with a keen sense of how good writing and reading skills apply to a wide variety of subjects.

Chalk Talk: Vygotsky’s Theory of Cognitive Development

How do our social surroundings and culture impact how we learn? Lev Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, developed a theory of how we think and learn as we grow—cognitive development—based on two basic principles. He theorized that when we learn, we understand our world around us better from within the context of social interactions and the impact of our culture. How someone’s culture views a certain topic, a certain object, or a social norm can have a great deal of impact on our willingness to learn, and our passion for that topic. In addition, the people with whom we learn and who influence our learning process greatly influence our learning desires and goals.
