Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carteret District Curriculum

Students in elementary and middle school receive a well-rounded education that focuses on achievement in core subject areas as well as electives. High school students have many Advanced Placement, honors and college-credit options available to them. All courses taught in the district are developed according to the guidelines n the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which provide benchmarks for learning in seven core subjects. Math and language arts standards are developed according to the Common Core State Standards.

An essential component of the social studies curriculum is a comprehensive study of world history and global studies. The standards ensure that students develop the ability to critically evaluate and analyze the interactions of people, cultures and environments and how those interactions have shaped human history. By studying how peoples of the past have interacted with one another, students can make informed decisions about issues that face the world today.

Chalk Talk: Athletic Participation Is Good For Kids

School is not just learning about history or language arts or science. School is a comprehensive experience that should include participation in activities, clubs and athletics. Athletics, in particular, sometimes gets a bad name for taking kids out of the classroom or taking students’ focus off of classroom learning. But athletic participation instills many relevant and valuable qualities in kids. Athletics teaches kids how to work as part of a team and consider the needs of others before their own. Kids learn excellent time management skills from participation in sports, which can translate into better time management in the classroom and when studying at home. Involvement in sports also encourages kids to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is especially important as the popularity of video games and social media continues to increase. Keeping kids active and engaged with others helps them to develop the skills they will need to be healthy and successful adults.
