Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Castle Shannon District Curriculum

Students in the Keystone Oaks School District enjoy foundational studies not only in reading, writing and math, they also learn social studies, sciences, physical education, and foreign languages. Math and Language Arts are based on the nationally-adopted Common Core Standards. This curriculum details the learning objectives within the major topics of each subject, and scaffolds student learning from year to year, gradually increasing the complexity and rigor of each course.

Students take tests which evaluate their proficiency in various Core subjects at appropriate grade levels. Advanced Placement courses and classes designed to prepare students for college are offered in the Keystone Oaks School District. Gifted students as well as students with other special needs including the need to learn English as a second language are provided with the extra education and or challenge classes that they need.

Chalk Talk: How to Write a Good Essay

When an essay is assigned, there are many things to consider. First of all, the topic or theme must be considered. Then the audience. How can you interest your audience with the information you are bringing to them? Next think about structure. Typically you should introduce your topic in the first paragraph, then tell your audience what you want to convey in detail, and finally, in the last paragraph, you should summarize what you have told them and leave them with a good ending. When writing an essay, it can be helpful to write an outline first and then write the actual essay. This will help you stay on track. Once you’ve written a rough draft. Read through and edit it, keeping in mind the goal. Did you convey the main idea? Did you do it in a way that was understandable and relevant to the audience you are trying to reach? Finally, have another person or two read and give input on your essay. Once you have revised it, rest in the knowledge of a job well done.
