Centennial District and Curriculum

Students that reside in Centennial can attend schools in either the Littleton Public School District or the Cherry Creek School District. Both Districts are dedicated to providing an excellent academic education in an atmosphere of small personalized classes. Specialized programs such as Gifted and Talented, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs are available for students at various grade-levels to enhance their educational experience. Schools within both districts have also been nationally recognized for their commitment to comprehensively using 21st Century technology in the classroom.

The Language Arts curriculum is dedicated to fostering students’ reading proficiency by developing comprehensive Literature Lists for students in grades K-12. These lists provide students with both required and optional reading material that is separated into grade-level appropriate sections. Given the importance of technology in the school districts, an “Inspired Writing” program has been developed that uses Google Apps for education along with other technology. Students’ writing skills are expected to progress from simple sentence structures to inclusive technical term papers by learning about the relationships between reading, writing, and research.

We currently cover the following Centennial-area school districts: Cherry Creek Schools and Littleton Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Centennial District Curriculum

Centennial-area elementary schools have implemented the program Everyday Mathematics for mathematics education of grades K-5. This program uses a research-based curriculum with classroom-tested teaching approaches to provide comprehensive beginning mathematics instruction. Students in grades 6-8 will then transition to the Connected Mathematics 2 program which uses an investigative-approach coupled with interactive problem solving. High school students are expected to explore mathematics through specific coursework that focuses on advanced topics.

The Science and Health curriculum is focused on providing students with an understanding of how scientific principles can shape environmental, personal, and community health. This curriculum is strongly targeted on thoroughly teaching students specific aspects of the scientific method such as experimental design, methodology, and problem solving techniques. The use of grade-specific Learner Objectives has also been instituted to ensure all students are proficient in specific scientific concepts.

Chalk Talk: Making the Most of Internet Technology for Educational Benefits

Most school districts are employing online technology to enrich the educational topics being taught to students. With so many website choices, students are sometimes unsure how to make the most out of the technology-education experience. One tip is to keep a current list of electronic materials that is well-organized. There are many helpful websites and programs available online, but finding the right link when needed can become a burden if bookmarks become too numerous. Make folders to categorize programs according to subject and purpose. Another tip is to use social media for more than just posting pictures. There are many online student media groups where students can ask for help on specific topics or discuss coursework with students from other locations with different perspectives. Students can even use these websites to generate ideas for their own projects. Through smart mining of internet resources, students can efficiently and effectively increase their academic success.
