Chehalis District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Chehalis School District has three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. The elementary schools are broken into two-grade school sites, which allow the students to have a small community learning environment and focus on their learning. The district follows the Washington State Standards for all grade levels starting in kindergarten and following through to high school. The curriculum used is written to ensure the expectations are met by providing clearly enumerated standards for learning. Students in the ninth grade focus on reading and writing skills to build a foundation for a successful high school career. The reading curriculum focuses on word recognition, comprehension, reading for different purposes and developing an interest in reading.

We currently cover the following Chehalis-area school district: Chehalis School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chehalis District Curriculum

In elementary school, the focus is on teaching and learning the basic foundational skills necessary to be successful in school. The English Language Arts curriculum teaches reading through the use of phonetics and word relationships while the writing curriculum begins in kindergarten with the idea that students have a way to tell stories and express ideas and continues to sixth grade where students learn to create writing passages that utilize proper English and Grammar. Math foundational skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are taught in Kindergarten and these skills are developed through sixth grade.

Middle and High school students apply the foundational skills learned in the primary grades to content instruction. Middle school students in English Language Arts classes begin to use their reading for analysis and their writing skills are enhanced through the construction of a variety of essays and writing techniques. In Math, most students take general math for seventh and eighth grade, but more advanced students are able to take Algebra 1 and Geometry. Middle school students take Science in both years, one year of physical science and one year of life science.

Chalk Talk: Signs of Bullying

Bullying is any intentional, aggressive behavior which involves a power of strength. Parents need to be aware of some of the signs that their child is being bullied. Physical signs include cuts, bruises and scratches or property damage such as torn or missing clothes, books etc. Another sign to look for is the number of friends the child has. Parents also need to see if the child is afraid of going to school, or they take a long path on the way to school, or fear of participating in activities. Other things to watch for include loss of interest in school work, depression or moodiness, headaches or other physical ailments, bad dream and loss of appetite. If the child is showing any of these signs, parents should gently take them aside to talk privately about events and brainstorm on ideas of solutions. This would also be the time to contact the school.
