Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chestertown District Curriculum
The K-12 literacy curriculum is rigorous, with the goal being to equip students with the language and thinking skills needed to communicate effectively. Writing is a significant portion of the curriculum and involves topics from science and history classes and be used as an evaluation tool by the teacher. While writing literary analysis pieces, students will be graded on their ability to support their conclusions with evidence from the text. Some areas that these writings will be graded on are proper grammar, mechanics, tone of voice, and organization.
Simple geometry, measurement, money skills, and decimals are included in the elementary curriculum as well. The work in these subjects consists of a lot of practice doing equations using paper and pencil and often times a calculator. Students will have assessments after the end of each unit or topic and usually a midterm exam as well as a final exam. These fundamental skills will allow students to be successful in more complicated mathematic topics.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Applying for Scholarships
Students who plan to apply for scholarships should begin their search for scholarship opportunities during their junior year. They should look at scholarships available through their district, local organizations, and community businesses. Additionally, students who plan to pursue a particular field - for instance, women in the sciences, are often the recipient of such focused scholarships. With a good list in hand, planning for deadlines and having checklists for the application requirements will make the process much smoother. When you prepare the application, show them that you are the right person. Keeping these things in mind will help you narrow down the large stack of scholarship applications to more manageable quantity that are more likely to be helpful to you.
