Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chestertown District Curriculum

The K-12 literacy curriculum is rigorous, with the goal being to equip students with the language and thinking skills needed to communicate effectively. Writing is a significant portion of the curriculum and involves topics from science and history classes and be used as an evaluation tool by the teacher. While writing literary analysis pieces, students will be graded on their ability to support their conclusions with evidence from the text. Some areas that these writings will be graded on are proper grammar, mechanics, tone of voice, and organization.

Simple geometry, measurement, money skills, and decimals are included in the elementary curriculum as well. The work in these subjects consists of a lot of practice doing equations using paper and pencil and often times a calculator. Students will have assessments after the end of each unit or topic and usually a midterm exam as well as a final exam. These fundamental skills will allow students to be successful in more complicated mathematic topics.
