Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chili District Curriculum

Instruction in Chili’s English Language Arts and math classes is based on the 2011 New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards. Instruction in all other classes, including core subjects such as science and social studies, and electives such as music and theater are based on the 1996 New York State Learning Standards. The English Language Arts curriculum is one that is designed to develop students to read closely and attentively in a wide range of subject areas, mediums, and genres. It also develops students’ ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing their thoughts about the texts they read.

Chili schools’ math curriculum is one that is designed to give young students a foundational knowledge of core mathematics concepts. The curriculum goes on to further develop and expand students’ understanding of these concepts as students move up through subsequent grades. The goal of the curriculum is to produce students who possess high-level mathematics knowledge that they can apply in college and careers.

Chalk Talk: Keeping the “Education” in “Physical Education”

In a time in which physical education classes are disappearing from schools it seems silly to complain that the Physical Education classes left are not rigorous enough when dealing with the “education” part of Physical Education, but it is something that needs to be said. Physical Education. class is more than a mental break in the middle of the day, and more than an opportunity to get kids to blow off extra energy. Of course, kids should be in good shape, and they should develop physical traits like speed, flexibility, and stamina. But that’s not all Physical Education class has to offer. It can be tied in with many wellness initiatives as well. Physical Education class is an opportunity to use fun, challenging, and engaging physical activities to teach kids about teamwork, fairness, and the ways in individuals contribute to shared goals.
