Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Columbus District Curriculum

Within the K-12 coursework, the standards of reading aim for comprehension of a variety of genres and texts, print and word recognition, the learning and use of new vocabulary, reading fluency, writing and oral language concepts, such as expressive, descriptive, and narrative essay writing, and public speaking and collaborating with a group of peers. These are a vast array of goals, focused upon as strands that students build ability in over the years.

In K-12 Mathematics, the spiraling curriculum has standards of learning such as: the understanding of various mathematical characteristics, knowledge of coordinates, geometry, mathematical transformations, spatial concepts, modeling, and measurement. Students are expected to gain problem-solving abilities in all major math topics with an end goal that students should become able to understand the best method to solve a problem and be able to do so with precision and accuracy.

Volunteers give their time to help others. This help is very much appreciated by the teachers and staff. Whether it is reading to a child, assisting a student with classwork, or performing tasks for the teacher (such as making copies, laminating, filing and more), the time volunteers give is priceless. If a volunteer decides to help, the teacher will be sure to give them lots of rewarding work to do!
