Corning District and Curriculum

The schools in Corning use a curriculum which is designed to provide students a wide-ranging base of skills and knowledge through which they develop conceptual understanding and thinking processes that they can apply to future learning and other personal goals. The curriculum is developed so that students from grades K-12 are a on a continuum based on objectives for learning that are developed for each subject.

In Math, elementary age students develop computational and classification skills, understanding and application of measurement skills, and strategies to understand proportions. Students are expected to be challenged with problems that they have to determine the best method for solving, which is done to develop mathematical reasoning. The curriculum also specifies that opportunities to interact with technology should be used in the teaching of math. During middle school and high school, the use and application of these skills are further focused on and students will take more in-depth, full year courses on topics in Geometry and Algebra.

In Science, students are introduced to properties in the Physical Sciences, Life Science, Earth Science and processes for inquiry and investigation. In the Science curriculum, technology is also emphasized with the goal of giving students a sense of the nature and science of technology. When students are in high school, their Science courses introduce concepts in Physics like motion and force, energy, thermodynamics, and electromagnetics. In Chemistry, students learn about atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonds, properties of gases and other topics.

We currently cover the following Corning-area school district: Corning Union Elementary School District, Corning Union High School District, Kirkwood Elementary School District, Richfield Elementary School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Corning District Curriculum

The Language Arts framework is designed to teach conventions of the language alongside the literacy skills to appreciate it. Students are expected to develop word analysis strategies, to demonstrate reading comprehension in writing and discussion, and ways to respond to literature including making connections between texts and the world. Throughout the reading strand, non-fiction is focused on, particularly at the high school level. Writing is also a major strand in Language Arts courses and students writing skills are developed so that they are able to write more analytic and research-based essays in high school.

These core academic experiences provide students with a broad base of knowledge. Once students are in high school, the range of opportunities available to them increase. There are programs within the district and across the county that are designed to suit diverse student interests. These programs, or independent study conducted at a student’s own high school, give them the chance to use the knowledge they have developed to take on more innovative and personally relevant courses.
