Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Coronado District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students develop the skills necessary to read literary and informational texts, write for a range of purposes, use a writing process, and to listen and speak with critical thinking skills. Student learning in Math in the areas of numeracy, algebra, geometry and data analysis.

In the Sciences, the curriculum describes what will be taught in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and technology.  All the core subjects also help students develop critical thinking skills like analysis, reasoning, problem-solving and process-oriented thinking.

The curriculum used in the Coronado Unified School District is a standards-based model for teaching and learning. In Language Arts and Math, the Common Core Standards are the framework for subject area learning. The skills and knowledge that students are expected to gain each year are thoroughly described in the Standards. Other core subjects have similarly structured curriculum frameworks.

  • Laptop Program - The Laptop Program at Coronado Middle School allows students to borrow a school computer for an extended period of time to work on class projects and other research. For students collaborating on projects, the use of a laptop could enliven the final product through the variety of media options students will have.
  • Contests and Scholarships - The district has a number of links to academic competitions, scholarship contests, and other award-based academic activities. There is a diverse offering from essay writing contests to robotics competitions.
  • Advanced Placement Program - Students at Coronado High School have 19 Advanced Placement courses they may opt to take. These courses offer college level academics and for students who perform successfully they will gain college credit.
