Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Coventry District Curriculum
Committed to excellence, Coventry Public Schools envisions curriculum that is challenging and strives for life-long learning. Coventry Public Schools employ a rigorous curriculum with input from local, state, and national standards. Using the Connecticut Common Core State Standards, students in the Coventry Public School District are assessed using the Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment in math, reading and writing.
The district has designed its curriculum and assessment around Standards-Based Grading and Reporting. Teachers measure student progress by assessing their grade-level competencies and life skills standards. Courses in the middle school include English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, health, computers, business education, technology education, family and consumer science, and foreign languages. Teachers will assess students’ progression through each subject and benchmark via a scale of proficiencies, such as advanced, high proficient, proficient (at grade level), low proficient, basic, and minimal.

Chalk Talk: Multiple Intelligences Theory: Spiritual/Existential Intelligence
The Multiple Intelligences Theory was developed by Professor Howard Gardner to help educators understand the different types of intelligence seen amongst students. The original seven types of intelligence include verbal/linguistic, mathematical/logical, spatial/visual, musical, kinesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Spiritual/existential and naturalist were later added to the original list. Seen at the 9th intelligence, existential intelligence involves one’s ability to use values and intuition to understand the world and others. Those high with existential intelligence can be said to “see the big picture”. They may be keenly interested in questions involving life and death. Possible career choices include philosophers, theologians, life coaches, and scientists. Do you question the meaning of life and how we got here? Are you considered strong in existential intelligence? Take an MI quiz to see where your strengths lies!
