Crescent City District and Curriculum
In Crescent City, teaching and learning is guided by the frameworks of the California Content Standards and the Common Core Curriculum Standards. These have been developed to provide a clear process by which students are taught the strategies for understanding content as well as the essential concepts central to each subject. Math and Language Arts are singled out for attention due to the way they provide foundational skills for learning and thinking across subject areas.
In Language Arts, students are taught from a phonetical and whole language approach in that attention to words, grammar, and conventions are taught in conjunction with the reading and writing curriculum. Students read for pleasure and for information, and develop the means to decode, analyze and evaluate written information. The focus moves towards informational texts when students are in high school, at which time the expectations for their ability to write reflective, expository and persuasive essays becomes a central focus.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Crescent City District Curriculum
Math teaches a host of problem-solving skills that begin at a basic level and quickly move into advanced topics. Students master topics in data analysis, geometry, and algebra through learning about mathematical representations and modeling, and methods of obtaining and expressing proof. Students are expected to be able to understand a problem, find an effective means of solving it, and work through it with accuracy and precision. They are also expected to be able to communicate this process, as writing has crossed curricular lines.
The Sciences have grown in terms of high school offerings. The emphasis on resources for science in the schools has increased, and so too have the possibilities. Students are able to take on courses in areas like the Environment and graduate high school ready to pursue advanced college level work in this field. These programs are designed to give students deep knowledge while also maintaining a focus on core curricular subjects while connecting subjects more clearly.

- Environmental Sciences - The California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network is a cooperative organization that has been founded by the California Department of Education, Environmental Education Program to provide resources for students, educators, and community members. They provide information about classes and workshops, service projects, outdoor exploration, and opportunities for funding programs designed to teach topics within this subject.
- STEM Resources - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are becoming a central focus of curricular resources in the schools at all grade levels. The addition of the subjects of technology and engineering to the teaching of math and science help students see the applications for their learning. Students are able to develop practical understanding based on complex subject matter through their coursework that incorporates these subjects. The STEM Resources that the district makes available are for parents as well as teachers.
- Program Offerings - Students at Del Norte have a wealth of academic programs that they may choose to join during their high school years. Students may also be able to pursue some of these course offerings as electives to help them understand its nature and determine their level of interest in the subject. The Career Tech Program offers classes in Business and Health & Human Services Occupations, and the Leadership Development Program has classes in Conflict Management and other leadership skills. There is also a program in Music and Performing Arts for students interested in pursuing a creative pathway.
