Crete District and Curriculum

As with all school districts in Illinois, the Crete-Monee Community Unit School District follows the curricular framework established in the Illinois Learning Standards (ILS). The ILS details learning objectives in all subjects as well as social emotional development so that the approach to student learning is holistic. Students are taught to identify and pursue their own educational needs in the hope that they will take responsibility for their own learning and develop a lifelong love of learning that will serve them well in their future endeavors, whether they pursue post-secondary education or immediately enter the workforce after graduation.

We currently cover the following Crete-area school district: Crete-Monee Community Unit School District 201U.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Crete District Curriculum

The Math standards used by the district are based on the Common Core Standards for Math. This curriculum framework was developed to address concerns that the math curriculum across the nation was a mile wide and inch deep and has increased the rigor of the expectations. The curriculum uses both high-quality national standards and looked to other nations with high performing math students. An additional part of the high school math curriculum covers the topics of mathematical functions and modeling.

The elementary math curriculum prepares students for this increased focus on mathematical thinking. Topics in data analysis are introduced early and give students the background upon which they can create mathematical models that are used to predict outcomes or probabilities. The early introduction of algebraic patterning, measurement, and geometric relationships helps students understand how functions contribute to their ability to solve problems. In high school, the geometry curriculum requires that students use their ability to solve and write algebraic equations to solve geometric problems.

Chalk Talk: College Application Types

There are many different types of college application, with varying qualities. One of the biggest differences is the due date for each one. Some of the most popular application types include Regular Decision, Early Decision, and Early Action. Regular Decision due dates tend to be the latest. They used to be December 1st, but with the proliferation of different application types, due dates for Regular Decision are getting later and later, often in January or February, some even in March. Other application types are due as early as November 1st, with the odd college having a due date in October. Some application types don’t have set due dates, but rather a range of dates that might start in the early fall and extend through the winter months.
