Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cushing District Curriculum

In Math, students are taught in the middle grades how to solve problems quickly and accurately that contain multi-digit numbers and common multiples/factors. Dividing numbers with multiple digits is mastered using the standard and required algorithm as stated in the course objectives. Operations such as the addition of numerals and subtraction alike, multiplication of multi-digit numbers, and division of the same forms of numbers are taught using decimals.

In English Language Arts, key themes and details of many types of texts are instructed. Standards in this area include finding evidence within the text to support an argument or problem, and to analyze the underlying theme of various stories, make inferences from readings (fiction and non-fiction), find details within print that lead up to the theme or the moral of the story, and summarizing any given text without imparting personal opinions or beliefs about the topic or theme of the reading.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Primary Science Teacher

The Primary Science Teacher is the one who introduces the children to the wonders of science. There are many areas of science, such as earth science, biology in animals and plants, physical science, and chemistry. The primary science teacher explains and demonstrates science using hands-on and visual instruction as well as having the students do the same. Discovery and trial and error are important aspects of science, and increases the students’ critical thinking skills while finding answers to many of the world of science’s phenomenon. Vocabulary acquisition is also a vital piece of science, and beginning in the primary grades the students learn many new words and scientific terminology to help them grow successfully and to keep them wanting to learn more. Science can be a challenging subject, but the primary science teacher makes it interesting and sometimes even fun!
