Darien District and Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Learning Standards for English language arts and math, and the Next Generation Science standards for science. The curriculum emphasizes the teaching of key skills that students need to succeed in college and the professional world. The curriculum also supports a safe, respectful, and nurturing learning environment which promotes the self-esteem and confidence necessary for student success.

We currently cover the following Darien-area school districts: Cass School District 63, Center Cass School District 66, Darien School District 61, and Hinsdale Township High School District 86.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Darien District Curriculum

The districts believe that high expectations for students lead to achievement and character. Though some students have different learning styles and rates, the curriculum supports differentiated instruction and intervention and allows for extra time. But this is contingent upon students learning self-sufficiency, responsibility, and accountability while taking responsibility for their own learning.

Mathematics classes offer a greater depth of instruction on fewer topics such as algebra and geometry within a school year. Humanities classes emphasize reading nonfiction and writing critical responses to readings in order to develop students’ ability to gather information and use evidence to back their claims while also developing their vocabularies and language skills. The curriculum is based on international standards so that students will be well equipped to compete in a global economy and prepared for post secondary education.

Chalk Talk: Regular Decision vs. Rolling Applications

Applying to college can be stressful, and deadlines are a big part of that. But once a student has applied, the real challenge comes: waiting. Rolling applications can help decrease that stress a great deal. When a student applies regular decision, the college won’t even read the application until the deadline has passed. Then, because they’re often so inundated, the college might take weeks or even months to respond. Rolling applications are different, though. When a student applies Rolling, the college reads the application right away, once it’s complete. They tend to respond within three weeks or so, whereas a regular decision application might not have even been read at that point. Also, rolling applications don’t have any of the restrictions some other applications types have. Not every college offers rolling applications, but for those that do, it’s a great option for applicants.
