Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Deer Park District Curriculum

Deer Park's Science curriculum focuses on students questioning, discovering and creating. The students are able to use science to help place the natural world in order and it guides them in testing, collecting and analyzing data. Deer Park students learn how to use the Internet and movies to enforce what they are learning in class. They also are able to transfer their knowledge in the area of Agricultural Science as they learn about small animal management, and livestock production.

Social Studies helps students develop a systematic way of studying history, geography, economics, society, citizenship and government. Through the elementary and middle school years students begin to become critical thinkers, and communicators. Throughout their entire educational life they also learn how to become an active participant in their local, state, national or even international communities. As they enter high school, students learn how to use power point, and videos to express their thoughts on folk and pop culture, religions, or human development of an area.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Child With Homework

Children can often become overwhelmed with homework and parents want to help in any way they can. Instead of completing homework for them a parent can help a child get into a routine of doing their homework. Help them become used to expectations, including the time and place for them to do the work. By setting up a routine, students can face the task calmly. When setting up a routine, allow the child to have time after they come home to rest for a little while, and have a snack. By doing these things the child can be energized when they sit down to work. Make sure to supply a work area that is large enough and separated from distraction. The area should remain tidy and supplied with all that the child will need. It should also be well-lit. By providing these things a child can become more willing to concentrate on their work.
