Chalk Talk: Common Core Is Cross Curricular

The Common Core State Standards is a nationwide initiative to standardize the knowledge and skills taught in math and language arts classes. Over forty states have adopted the standards, but some questions linger about the effectiveness of common standards. Some people think that the Common Core Standards ignore all other subjects. However, the Common Core Standards actually promote cross-curricular learning. For example, language arts teachers can work with social studies teachers to integrate historical texts into the language arts curriculum. Likewise, language arts teachers can help teachers in other subject areas integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening into their curricula. The Common Core Standards provide a framework for all teachers to implement language arts and math into their classroom, regardless of subject.
