Chalk Talk: Schools Provide a Social Education

Public schools provide students with many excellent opportunities to learn and grow academically. But school is also a great place for children to acquire effective social skills. In the early grades, students learn how to share and take turns, how to play well with others, and how to express their feelings and emotions in an appropriate manner. This sets the stage for later social development in the middle school years, where students gain more advanced communication skills, as well as the ability to resolve conflict in an effective manner. Social development in high school takes on more adult features. Learners explore emotions and emotional expression on a deeper level. High school students also become more self-aware and acquire the ability to reflect on how they feel and how they make others feel. The social skills students gain over the years give them the tools they need to develop into socially responsible adults.
