The development of proficiency in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammatical structure are all emphasized.
In Mathematics, students are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of problem sets, showing that they are able to think in abstract terms as well as quantitative terms. Additionally, they will be required to use the appropriate tools to solve problems, and create effective arguments for their solutions. As students progress through the Sciences they will be exposed to both physical and biological topics, ranging from an understanding of organisms to the physical laws of matter. Chalk Talk: Writing Persuasively: The Importance of Audience
It is important, when delivering an effective argument, to take into consideration the reader who will be on the receiving end. Certain tactics work better within certain audiences. Parents, friends, employers, and college admissions offices are all different audiences and require different approaches. Keeping this in mind, it is important that when asked to write persuasively the writer fully understands the task. If applying for a scholarship, for example, make sure that essay prompts are fully read, and answered in full. Similarly, when meeting with a prospective employer, it is important to take into consideration the fact that the person you are meeting with has the potential to be your boss. As a result, it is probably a good idea not to speak to him as you would your close friends.
