Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Duncan District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, within the primary writing strand, the students are taught usage and mechanics. The students are instructed on the capitalization and the identification of many abbreviations in which they will come into contact as readers and writers, such as “Dr.”, “Mrs.”, and “St.” Using proper mechanics in writing is also emphasized, such as the use of capitalization at the beginning of a sentence, when using the pronoun “I” when writing “Dear” in greetings and always when using proper nouns.

The students in the primary grades begin to perform mathematics skills that will prepare them for the spiraling curriculum as they mature and move on to the higher concepts. Patterning with numbers and shapes is performed by the students, and as the patterns begin as simple two-variable patterns, they do increase in difficulty throughout the school year. They will also create their own patterns with different designs.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Band Director

The band director has many responsibilities. Not only does he teach classes to various instrument players, but the band director is responsible for choreographing the routines for the band that they play during the many games of the school year. The band director must choreograph the performances, but also be sure all of the members know the music and play it well. Between uniforms, fund raising, teaching, and traveling to performances, the band director plays many roles!
