Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edgewater District Curriculum

All local districts build their curricula off of the recommendations of the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. By structuring learning experiences according to these documents, students at each grade level in each district receive comparable instruction and assessment. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency on benchmarks and standards in all core subject areas, from math and science to art and history.

As part of the visual and performing arts curriculum, all students in Edgewater undertake a study of the visual arts. In these classes, students acquire the skills they need in order to produce art in a number of mediums, from painting to pottery to drawing. Students learn about color, texture, form and other principles of visual art and work to create art that exhibits these principles. Genres such as realism, surrealism and conceptual art are discussed, and students identify the characteristics of each. Lastly, students develop a portfolio of their work that expresses understanding of artistic principles, trends and personal creativity.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Taking the SAT

Taking the SAT – or any other major test – can be nerve wracking. However, there are a number of strategies to use in order to improve your performance. First, familiarize yourself with the organization of the test. There are a number of practice tests and booklets available for purchase. Second, answer the easiest questions first. There’s nothing wrong with completing questions out of order, so long as you remember to go back and answer the questions you skipped. Mark the questions you skip in your test booklet in order to keep track. Lastly, on more difficult questions, take an educated guess as to the answer. Try to rule out one or two possibilities in order to give yourself a better chance of selecting the correct answer. Again, use your test booklet to cross off answers you know are incorrect. This will help you determine which of the remaining answers is your best option.
