Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elizabeth District Curriculum

Elizabeth’s Language Arts curriculum incorporates a variety of literature throughout the ages. Students are encouraged to read, not only for information, but in order to expand their understanding of the human condition. Through writing, students are also aided in expressing their ideas, opinions and comprehension. The Math curriculum covers a range of concepts and skills, beyond addition and subtraction. Students learn strategies for problem solving, measurement, dimensions, and continuously build upon prior knowledge.

Students experience Science through a multitude of hands-on activities and inquiry-based labs as well as through informational texts, use of multimedia and discussion. Some of the material covered balance and motion, matter and energy, the human body, food chains and ecosystems, chemical changes, physical changes and chemical reactions. There is also a focus on the process of scientific discovery, the formulation and working through of hypotheses, and understanding the connection between science and society.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Reading to Children

Reading is a crucial skill for children to develop in order to ensure successful learning and personal development. Parents can encourage development of this skill by taking time to read aloud to their children. The benefits of reading aloud to children are many. Reading aloud helps children to understand the written word because they hear how text is supposed to sound. Children also tend to model their parents, and being read to can encourage children to read on their own. Reading time also facilitates bonding between parents and children, especially when reading is incorporated into an enjoyable routine. Reading also stimulates the brain and improves concentration, imagination and vocabulary.
