Ellsworth District and Curriculum

The Regional School Unit 24 is dedicated to ensuring that each child receives the best possible education so that, upon high school graduation, college and career goals are attainable. This curriculum ensures that your child will learn literacy skills that will be built upon and used for the entire school experience. Students begin learning literacy and mathematics skills in kindergarten where a basic foundation is set for success in future grades. They are also introduced to basic concepts in science as they begin to explore the natural world.

We currently cover the following Ellsworth-area school district: Regional School Unit 24.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ellsworth District Curriculum

By the time students enter first grade they will be able to write their names. In first grade teachers will help students to build upon their skills and to begin the teaching of fundamental reading and comprehension skills. By the time students reach high school skills are developed to the point that students read and analyze text in fiction and nonfiction and write several types of papers, such as informative and persuasive writing.

The foundation for math and science skills are also constructed in kindergarten, with students learning to recognize and write numbers, as well as how to add and subtract numbers using objects, which gives students their basic algebra skills. A foundation for geometry is built by teaching students to group blocks of different shapes, like rectangles, triangles and circles, into the right groups. With each grade, students review the skills they learned and build more complex skills upon their foundation. Call this, if you will, the “building blocks” of education.

Chalk Talk: Make Learning Fun

We all know that kids need to learn, but does it have to be boring? Many of us remember the grade school days that saw us sitting straight up at our desks with our feet flat on the floor while the teacher talked and wrote on the blackboard. Those days are over and now when we look inside a classroom we see students learning through engaging and interactive hands-on activities. One might even assume that there is no learning going on. This could not be further from the truth! Strides in science and education have shown educators that kids learn better through interactive learning and play learning. When your child is pretending to be an animal or wearing costumes pretending to be doctors or teachers, they are learning skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Join in with your child and play pretend games. You will learn more about your child than you thought possible and you will also be creating great memories for your child that will last a lifetime.
