Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Flowood District Curriculum

Students to Flowood schools learn from the first day that books have so much to say. Reading lessons are used to help children reach reading goals at their own pace while having mini-lessons to help reinforce what they learn. They soon begin to log what their reading either by the book, for the younger children, or by the chapter as they grow. Literature is also used to help children experience what they are learning in class. In high school, they can choose to explore literature more by taking classes in mythology or by finding the ties between literature and the movies in Dramatic Criticism.

Today’s technology is used to help children understand science at Flowood schools. Many of the teachers, from kindergarten through twelfth grade post their science notes on their websites. Plus, they each show links to help children become knowledgeable in all subject area in science. Whether kindergarteners are studying insects, or middle school students are studying ecology, the teachers find ways to make the subject relevant to their lives.

The second-grade world is one that expands each day. This applies to their social lives also. At this age children begin to be aware of whom they are and they begin to form friends, both in groups and one-on-one. Children of the same gender will generally group together. However, this is also the age of crushes. The way that the child in second grade acts on the playground is also reflected in the classroom as group projects are easier for them to handle at this time. Overall, this is the age that begins to set the child up for the years to come.
