Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fountain Hills District Curriculum
In the different subjects, students spend their years exploring the major topics and developing a depth of knowledge that promotes higher-order thinking. In Language Arts, by reading for pleasure, reading for information, studying different genres and media, and learning research skills, students become prepared for a high level of analytic work. They learn different techniques to become effective writers who have range in their writing style. Such skills are taught in a process-oriented manner, so that students develop their understanding.
The Math curriculum requires that students develop problem-solving abilities in geometry, algebraic relationships, and data analysis. From learning about fractions, ratios and probability, students become able to perform more complex statistical analysis. Mathematic modeling is important in the curriculum and helps to bring about quantitative reasoning skills. All these abilities support learning in other subject areas and are emphasized for their real world applications.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Parental Involvement in their Child’s School
For many years, educators have been encouraging parents to get involved, to visit the classroom, to volunteer at their child’s school. According to recent educational research, schools are beginning to see the benefits of parental involvement in their children’s school. When parents are involved in their children’s education and school community, the children are presenting with higher standardized test grades, higher classroom grades, behaving better at home and at school, and showing better social skills. This is encouraging news for parents and children. Parents can be involved with their children’s education in little ways such as by providing a learning environment at home, celebrating the child’s academic achievement, and communicating frequently with his or her teacher.
