The curriculum lists a series of standards that students should meet in each subject. The subject area topics remain the same throughout a students education but the standards increase in complexity. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fredericksburg District Curriculum

The Science curriculum requires that by 7th grade students are scientifically literate in a number of areas. They are expected to understand scientific investigation and reasoning, matter and energy focusing on the role of the Sun in other biological and environmental processes, and force, motion, and energy as seen in the human body, plant life, and through weather patterns. During middle school, students are also expected to make observations and record information using the International System of Units.

Geography is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. At Fredricksburg Independent School District geography helps the students become aware of the different cultures, lifestyles, countries and maps throughout the world. They discover how to use each of these and how to find similarities and differences. Migration patterns of humans are examined as well and students learn about the movements of various world cultures in history. By studying how various groups of people live throughout the world, they also discover how similar we all are.

Chalk Talk: Family-Paired Reading

One way that a parent can help a child to increase their fluency in reading is to take part in family-paired reading. This method calls for the child to choose a book that they are comfortable reading. They then sit down with the parent and begins reading until they make a mistake. At this point the parent joins in reading until the child signals that they are ready take over again. This continues for about 15 minutes. After they finish reading, the parent and the child talk about what they read, then the parent needs to praise the child for any improvements that have been made or for letting the parent know when he wanted to take over again. By doing this nightly, the child will improve in fluency and comprehension skills.
