Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Freeport District Curriculum
The English curriculum at Brazosport Independent School District helps students learn how to make proper presentations, both Written and oral. Students begin by learning the skills needed to share topics that are important to them. They also learn how to summarize material in written and oral forms. Students continue on to discover how to carry out research on a topic and then to translate it into a form that would interest an audience. Each of these will be helpful in students post-secondary pursuits.
The social studies curriculum at Brazosport Independent School District explores various cultures around the world. This begins by studying the local history, including why and when people settled here. This continues as the study their state and the country. Students discover the importance trade and exploration made on settling an area. They also find that around the world there are similar reasons for people to create homes and communities in specific areas. Learners also examine how technology is rapidly changing the world today. The interdependence of people in the modern world is discussed, both in terms of improved communication and economic benefits.

Chalk Talk: Talking About the News With Children
Children are bombarded by the news, often repeatedly. They can oftentimes feel overwhelmed with the scenes they see or the words they heard. To help them understand, limit the amount of material they are presented with, especially young children. The young may not realize that the news program is repeating the same event and the repeated viewing can escalate their fear. After the viewing, the parent should take a few minutes to talk about what was seen, but do not over-explain. The use of simple words and limited time can help ease some of the fear. After this, parents need to realize that the fear the child feels is real and needs to be recognized, oftentimes a hug and a smile can help a child feel better.
