Greencastle District and Curriculum

The Greencastle Community School Corporation adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in 2010, and school districts throughout the state have been refining their curricula to meet these goals. The CCSS puts an emphasis on literacy and mathematics; however, the district develops instruction to prepare students for secondary academics in all subjects. The district also stresses the importance of fine arts and requires that students participate in community service at its schools.

We currently cover the following Greencastle-area school district: Greencastle Community School Corporation.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greencastle District Curriculum

Students take courses in language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science throughout their educational careers at Greencastle Community Schools. Elective classes are also available in many areas, including the arts, business, engineering, and computer design. All courses focus on increasing critical thinking skills and developing a well-rounded individual who can succeed in college or career.

Dual credit courses also provide opportunities to get an early start on college education by earning college credits in many areas, including business, language arts, mathematics, and fine arts. College credits can also be earned through Advanced Placement courses that study subjects such as world languages, science, and history. Before students apply to colleges, they are provided the opportunity to take the PSAT. Scores from this test are incorporated into the curriculum to enhance learning in reading, mathematics, science, and writing.

Chalk Talk: How To Foster A Good Working Relationship With Your Teacher

Student-teacher relationships can be beneficial in many ways. As students progress to high school, they may need to ask teachers for letters of recommendation for college applications, a task that requires the teacher to know something more about the student than just their name. You can get a good connection with your teacher by being respectful and showing up on time. However, it is also helpful to go beyond these steps and be alert in class. Raise your hand and answer questions to the best of your ability to show that you’re listening. You can also schedule time to talk to your teacher after class, if needed. During this time, you can get extra help, talk about your progress, or talk about a future career. It is important to remember to be sincere, however. If your only motivation is to get a letter of recommendation, teachers can usually tell. Try to foster a good working relationship with a teacher who teaches a subject you are truly interested in. Having mentors can be extremely helpful throughout life and getting started early on this process never hurts.
