Greenwich District and Curriculum
Greenwich Public Schools follow the Connecticut Common Core State Standards for learning in all content areas. The Common Core Standards provide a path for in depth understanding of content. The Common Core Standards demand a rigorous learning environment that will place students on the path to success. Greenwich students also have access to one of the nation’s oldest programs geared for gifted students. The advanced learner program challenges students and engages them at an even higher level. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greenwich District Curriculum
In the early years, the focus in Language Arts is to provide literacy instruction in reading, writing, and speaking. As each student progress, the curriculum builds upon the previous year and provides the ability to increase vocabulary and critical thinking skills. In Mathematics, the number of required topics each year is reduced allowing time for students to gain a deeper understanding before moving on. The same philosophy applies to Science and Social Studies where critical reading and understanding are essential.
In Language Arts, the focus remains on reading comprehension, critical thinking and both written and verbal communication. In Science, students are encouraged to become critics of the world around them and ask questions while probing into the underpinnings of scientific content. Students are asked to question the world around them and engage in experiments to better understand fundamental concepts. Rigorous and in depth understanding reaches to mathematics as well where students gain a confidence in understanding of math concepts.

Chalk Talk: Uniforms in Public Schools
This controversial topic has been the subject of debate for a very long time. Nearly everyone has a strong opinion one way or another. On one hand critics site freedom of speech and expression as being quintessential adolescent behavior. A teenager can find independence by expressing who they are by what they wear. On the other hand, students in the United States are bullied for what they wear. Whether its theft of expensive designer clothes or teasing for a student’s less than stylish apparel, what you wear can become a source of great conflict for some. Uniforms by that regard would level the playing field and reduce conflict. Each school has to make the decision that is right for them and what works for one school might not work for another. However, uniforms are an option to keep kids focused less on what everyone looks like and more on what they are learning.
