Chalk Talk: Reading in Early Kindergarten

Whether the parents have read to a child since it was born, or the child has had very little reading experience, in kindergarten they will be exposed to many books. The things that teachers want the child to learn in the first couple of months seem daunting but most children succeed. First they are going to become familiar with their name. This will be placed on their cubbie, lunches, desks, worksheet and more. Next, each child will learn to recognize letters and the sounds they make, so they can eventually sound out words. Between the teacher reading to them, and the child looking at books themselves, they are going to become familiar with how to hold books, reading left, to right and letters, words and sentences. They will also learn several sight words, rhyming words and word family which will help them reach the ultimate goal, at this time, comprehension of what they read.
