Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Guttenberg District Curriculum

The Guttenberg and North Bergen school districts work together to ensure that their curricula are aligned to the same standards. By utilizing the recommendations of the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, the districts ensure that students moving from eighth grade in Guttenberg to ninth grade in North Bergen have the foundation for continued academic success.

The world languages curriculum prepares students for life and work in the 21st century by ensuring they have command of a foreign language and an understanding of other cultures. Students acquire languages skills in three modes. First, students engage in the interpretive mode, in which they acquire the ability to read, write, speak and interpret another language on the word and sentence level. Next, they enter the interpersonal mode, in which they develop skills needed to engage in complex conversations as both a speaker and a listener, as well as read complex passages. Lastly, students learn presentational skills that make it possible to deliver information to others in an engaging and culturally appropriate way.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Educational Technology

Students today, unlike those even 20 years ago, must have a deep understanding of how to utilize technologies if they are to be successful in school and careers. By integrating technology into the classroom, students learn valuable skills that will benefit them now and in the future. Technology in the classroom teaches students how to quickly find information, how to collaborate with others remotely, and how to express themselves using digital tools. Being able to use technology also provides students with an opportunity to actively engage in their learning and take responsibility for what they learn and know, as opposed to sitting passively in the classroom during a lecture. The opportunity to develop self-discipline and productivity skills in the classroom will help them to become better students and better workers in the future.
