Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harker Heights District Curriculum
Harker Heights Schools includes geometry in their mathematics programs. When the students are younger they may learn about the characteristics of shapes, such as triangles having three sides. Then when they are in high school they explore this and other shapes even more. They learn about different type of shapes and then as a project they look for these shapes in life. They then have to learn how to measure dimensions, describe the shapes using formulas and communicate their spatial analysis.
The Science Curriculum at Harker Heights Schools introduces the concept of theories to the students from the beginning. They ask students for their ideas on how or why certain things occur like they do. Such as why does water evaporate? The children come up with their own theories and then they discuss or conduct experiments to test these theories. This continues through high school when they learn about genetics and evolution. The students are encouraged to think and be creative when confronting a concept that is new.

Harker Heights District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Harker Heights uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as a basis for their creative and meaningful curriculum. This a standards based series of frameworks in each subject that describe the comprehensive skills and knowledge that students will acquire in their subjects. It does not prescribe the ways in which these lessons must be taught, and so teachers have some latitude when designing lessons to fit their students learning styles. Beyond the core subjects, community service and character education are also emphasized as important areas of learning.
We currently cover the following Harker Heights-area school district: Killeen Independent School District.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: Summer Internships
Summertime offers many opportunities for a teen to receive experience in an intern position. They can vary as much as taking an overseas mission trip to assisting a profession locally. If this is of interest to a teen, they should first decide what type of experience they are looking for. Perhaps look at their favorite subjects or activities as a starting point. Next, decide if they are looking for a part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid opportunity. They also need to decide how many weeks they are looking for. Then contact people that are involved in these areas. If the teen would like to intern at a local business, talk with some local business owners. If they are interested in a mission trip, perhaps they can talk with a minister. Make sure to find out specifics about any internship before committing to it. With an internship a teen can explore a career option or a whole different world while still enjoying the summer.
