Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harrison Township District Curriculum

Both the Harrison Township School District and the Clearview Regional High School District seek to provide their students with a well-rounded education that fosters a love of lifelong learning. Classroom learning extends to the real world, where students engage in lessons that help them develop essential skills for success. To ensure all students receive an excellent education, both districts have adopted the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards to drive curriculum development and planning.

The comprehensive health and physical education curriculum includes a social and emotional health strand. As part of their studies, students learn to identify the factors at home, at school and in the community that can positively or negatively impact social or emotional health. Students acquire effective strategies for managing stress and conflict, and determine healthy ways to deal with rejection and loss. Students also learn about self-respect and the importance of respecting others regardless of social, cultural, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic or gender differences.

Chalk Talk: ACT Test Tips

Taking the ACT test can be extremely stressful given how important the scores can be in determining admission to colleges and universities. When the big day comes, consider these tips for improving your performance. First, eat a good meal before the test. Even if you feel too nervous to eat, make yourself eat something. Your brain needs fuel for the test and food is the way to provide that. Second, once you begin the test, read the directions and each question very carefully. If necessary, read them multiple times to ensure you understand what is being asked of you. Doing so will help you avoid silly mistakes. Lastly, answer the easy questions first, then go back and address the more difficult questions. Don’t dwell on a difficult question! This will help you pace yourself and avoid having a lot of unanswered questions at the end of a section.
