Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hermantown District Curriculum

Hermantown’s elementary curriculum helps students develop strong interpersonal communication skills. Children learn how to appropriately communicate their feelings and emotions with friends and family members. Students likewise learn how to recognize emotions that others are expressing. Acquiring active listening skills is a central component of the curriculum. Students also learn how to engage with others through the use of appropriate nonverbal communication and confirming what others have said through eye contact, head nods, and the like.

Middle school learners in Hermantown participate in a U.S. history curriculum that includes an exploration of local Native American history. Learners compare two local tribes, the Dakota and Anishinaabe, and describe their interactions with one another and with other local peoples prior to 1800. The period of European exploration and its impact on local tribes is examined as well. The role of trappers and missionaries in bringing European customs and influence to the area is analyzed, with students describing how these influences helped the United States gain control of the area as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

Chalk Talk: Are School Uniforms the Way to Go?

School uniforms have been a point of contention for many students and families over the years. As with many issues, this one has both supporters and detractors. Supporters of uniforms maintain that they help foster a feeling of unity among students. Everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, wears the same clothes, which can reduce bullying and improve the school’s cohesiveness. Supporters also point out that school uniforms save families money because they don’t have to purchase school clothes for their children. However, detractors are quick to point out that uniforms squash students’ individuality and personal expression. Likewise, school uniforms typically require frequent washing, ironing, and other maintenance, which can add up to a lot of time over the course of a week. Some students also complain that uniforms are not comfortable to wear.
