Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hinesville District Curriculum

There is a strong emphasis on literacy and writing in this district. Like many schools across the United States, this school is requiring students to read and write more extensively throughout their school career. This is intended to improve the overall reading, writing, and comprehension skills that students possess upon graduation from high school enabling them to be better prepared for the rigors of college or career.

The curriculum is focused on each student’s continual practice and improvement in the implementation of skills that are recommended by the Board of Education. In addition to the main content areas, there Fine Arts courses, Health and Physical Education, and World Languages. These courses also use clear standards that are recommended in the main curriculum and provide continuity to instruction. In high school, students have opportunities to explore their interests through a work and apprenticeship program if they choose to participate.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hinesville Educational News

  • Reaching for the Stars - The Liberty County School System is celebrating the 15 devoted assistant principals who, through hard work and dedication to their schools and students, completed the Rising Stars collaborative program offered through the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement. Through the training and collaboration offered in this program these assistant principals are now inspired with new and fresh ideas and beneficial resources that are all aimed at improving their schools and the education and safety that is provided to their students.
  • Read all About It - The Annual Liberty County Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl offers students a chance to show off their literary knowledge and information retention. The questions may seem unimportant but as we all know remembering minute details is an important part of life. The competition allows students from around the area to gather and display their knowledge and celebrate their love of reading. This year the reigning champions did not place allowing new schools to take home a victory. There was lots of silliness and joy as teams dressed as characters from their favorite books.
  • Making the List - A Liberty County High School superstar has been ranked close to the top of college football recruiter Tom Lemming’s list of the top 100 players for the class of 2014. The student was ranked No. 2 of the five-star recruits for the class of 2014. This is a big honor and a definite sign that if this player continues to work hard both on the field and in the classroom he will be almost guaranteed a college football scholarship. Such honors are not given away they are earned, and are a testament to the devotion of both the student and the coaches who work tirelessly to develop their skills.

Chalk Talk: Reading for Meaning

While many people enjoy reading, reading for information is often hard for individuals to complete with absolute success. There are many ways to improve this vital skill regardless of one’s age. First, slow down and take a breath - reading information rapidly is not going to help you out. Remember you are reading for information. Block out distractors, if there are pictures or other distractors on the page; use a sheet of paper to cover up everything except the line you are reading. After each paragraph, stop and ask yourself what you just read if you are confused reread that section. Finally, do not fear taking notes. Jot down important ideas for topics and what they mean. The most important step is the first - simply slow down and read thoughtfully and carefully.
