Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hugo District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum in Hugo is based on the Common Core State Standards. An essential part of the curriculum is helping high school students develop excellent vocabulary skills. Students use the context of writings to determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases. Students also work on identifying the proper changes that must be made to words to change their meaning, such as transforming ‘analysis’ to ‘analyze.’ Both print and digital resources are introduced to students as well, such that they have the resources needed to determine the meaning of a word.

The science curriculum in Minnesota includes a comprehensive examination of engineering. Middle school students look at common engineering systems, such as bridges, and identify the impacts that such systems have on the daily lives of humans. Learners develop an understanding of the design process, and come to an understanding that there is no perfect design. The risks and rewards of engineering something are analyzed, with students noting the importance of learning from one’s mistakes to make future designs that much better.

Chalk Talk: Paying for College on a Budget

Paying for your child’s college can be one of the most expensive endeavors you will undertake. But making those expenses more affordable is relatively easy given enough time to plan and prepare. Beginning a college savings account, even as late as when your child is in high school, allows you to set money aside tax-free for your child’s education. Any money put into a college savings account does not count toward financial aid eligibility determinations, so even having several thousands of dollars in such an account won’t negatively impact your child’s ability to get need-based aid. Another great way to save money is to encourage your child to take concurrent courses in high school. Concurrent enrollment courses allow your child to earn both high school and college credit, and often free of charge. The more credits your child can take in high school, the less you will have to pay in college expenses.
