Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Incline Village District Curriculum

The Literacy program in K-5 starts with phonics and sound awareness, with students learning to letter recognition and the sounds made by each letter. Phonics is the foundation for teaching reading skills. Students learn about different types of writing and comprehension. Throughout a student’s school lifetime, more skills are added to the building block structure, preparing them for high school graduation. When students graduate they will be able to access and apply their knowledge and skills.

Students begin their adventures in learning math in Kindergarten. The math curriculum starts out with counting, sorting, shape identification and number recognition. These skills prepare students for more building blocks of math skills as they progress through the grades. High school mathematics adds the most difficult building blocks to the knowledge structure, preparing students for career choices after graduation.

Chalk Talk: How Do I Choose a Tutor?

As a parent, you want to make sure that your child is getting the best education you can provide and you want to know how to help when he or she is struggling in some classes. It is important for you to be proactive in your child’s education at home by keeping on top of homework issues. You need to keep a good line of communication open with your child concerning homework and issues at school. When your child is having difficulties, the first step is to arrange a meeting with the teacher so that the two of you, along with your child, can work together to find exactly where the problem is and then to develop an action plan. Usually, a teacher will inform the parent when a student’s grades become an issue. You may decide that your child needs tutoring, at which point, you will begin exploring options.
