Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Independence District Curriculum
In Mathematics, students follow a core concepts program that indicates what is to be learned at each grade level. There is a list of basic skills to be taught at all grade levels. In early years, basic Math skills are taught and later applying the concepts becomes important. In elementary school, teachers begin with number use and move into adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Algebra and geometry are introduced in early grades and are a large component of mathematics programs in middle and high school.
In English, students are taught reading, writing, speaking, listening, inquiring, observing and how to use technology to communicate. Students read an assortment of literature and learn to apply it to their daily lives. A writing initiative is in place and use of the written word s emphasized. Teachers continually assess students’ written work. Technology use is integrated into all areas of language arts. Students have access to the internet for all of their subjects.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Doing Homework
Homework will be a breeze if you follow two simple tips that work. You must first allow a time and second a place to do it. Schedule a definite time frame each day for homework. Have a place that you do homework that is quiet, comfortable and easy to access. With a time and a place set out you will find that the work is not so onerous. In the place, have a flat desk or table, a good light and a comfortable chair. Homework takes a lot less time if you attend to it in a reasonable time frame and have a reasonable place to do it.
