Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jefferson Hills District Curriculum
Middle school students, from grades six through eight, are provided with more classes and studies than they were previously exposed to in order to prepare them for the rigorous pace of high school. These extra courses include an Art Curriculum, Family & Consumer Science and Foreign Language. These courses allow and encourage more specific exploration into area and career goals as well as accessing and developing other skills that students will benefit from in high school.
High school curriculum builds upon middle school curriculum with more options in Foreign Languages, increased options in the Core subjects such as Honors and Advanced Placement courses and others. In high school, students are also encouraged to choose a career path or direction and take electives based on that. Because of this, there is a Business Curriculum offered for students interested as well as extended technology courses in topics such as web design, programming and coding.

Chalk Talk: How to Encourage your Student’s Scientific Mind
Science might not be your best subject, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help your child enjoy it. Remember, science doesn’t have to be a college Physics lab. It can just as easily be your child asking how a seesaw works or how fast they are running. Science is all about asking questions and discovering answers. Now that is something you can encourage your child with. Many kids who prefer hands on learning to reading love science because of this. Science is hands on and generative in many ways. Going outside, picking leaves and making leaf rubs is science. They can then check a book out of the library to help them understand why the leaves have veins. What are they for? What do they carry? Whether you have the answers or not, you can encourage your student’s scientific mind.
