Chalk Talk: Common Core - ELA at a Glance

The Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Literacy promotes skills and knowledge for students to be successful in college, career, and life upon graduation. There are a few shifts in the new Common Core Curriculum in the area of ELA. Now students will have regular practice with complex texts and their academic language. Text complexity as it connects to reading comprehension and academic vocabulary will become a new focus. Reading, writing, and speaking using evidence-based text citations are another key component of the ELA Common Core. Students need to be able to use their prior knowledge, opinion, and experiences in order to create effective argumentative and informative writing. Students must learn to use evidence-based writing as part of their analysis. Lastly students will build knowledge through content rich nonfiction. Students will now be exposed to more informational texts as an important part of building their own content knowledge.
