Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kerrville District Curriculum

The reading curriculum at Kerrville Schools begins by introducing students to basic reading skills. During the first years of school students learn decoding skills and build their sight word toolbox. Soon they begin to find out about the different characteristics that make up different genre of books. They study literary devices like symbolism and foreshadowing, and understand how authors use these devices to help craft their message. They also learn about text features that help them navigate non-fiction texts.

The social studies curriculum at Kerrville Schools helps students learn about their surroundings a little at a time. In the first years of school students learn about their community and the people that help it to run the way it does. They also find out about Texas and the history behind its statehood. By the time they finish high school students learn about the United States government and economic system as well as the governments and economies in other cultures.

The Kerrville Independent School District helps meet the needs of learners by including educators, staff, parents and the community in the implementing of their curriculum. This educational system is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Beyond the core requirements of the curriculum, community outreach and character education are also central to the learning students do. Throughout their education, students find that each person has the opportunity to make a difference in their area or in the world.

Chalk Talk: SAT Math

When it comes to the SAT tests, the math section can be overwhelming. With a little knowledge of how to prepare for it, a student can face it with a little more confidence. Algebra and Geometry are needed before taking this test. Then plan on taking time to prepare for the math section. One way to prepare is to complete the practice sections of one of the SAT preparation books that can be found in a library or bookstore. Make sure to find the most current edition to make sure that the problems will be more like those on the test. Each math test has three sections with most of the problems being in multiple choice format. The areas to study include computations, algebra, probability/statistics, functions and geometry. With these few guidelines, hopefully the student will be able to breathe a little easier and rest before the test.
