Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Homa District Curriculum

Mission Consolidated Independent School District teaches students about their state history through the Social Studies curriculum. The students discover the factors that led to the discovery of Texas, as well as the people and the battles that led to its joining the United States. Geography is also examined through a modern lens. Students learn about green building practices and how those practices can limit the impact of human activity on the environment. Dams, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure are explored, with students analyzing how these structures benefit humans.

The science curriculum includes the subjects of biology, physics and chemistry. Each of these are taught from the general aspect of the subjects to more specifics. In the study of biology, the students begin by looking at the entire body, or plant. In geology, properties of minerals, such as luster, hardness, and streak are examined. Students also look at the crystallinity of minerals and the atomic structure of minerals. From here the students will look at the general parts that make up the whole. By the time they graduate, they will have discovered the molecules and atoms that are found in each and the purpose of these to help the item to live.
