Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Homa District Curriculum
Mission Consolidated Independent School District teaches students about their state history through the Social Studies curriculum. The students discover the factors that led to the discovery of Texas, as well as the people and the battles that led to its joining the United States. Geography is also examined through a modern lens. Students learn about green building practices and how those practices can limit the impact of human activity on the environment. Dams, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure are explored, with students analyzing how these structures benefit humans.
The science curriculum includes the subjects of biology, physics and chemistry. Each of these are taught from the general aspect of the subjects to more specifics. In the study of biology, the students begin by looking at the entire body, or plant. In geology, properties of minerals, such as luster, hardness, and streak are examined. Students also look at the crystallinity of minerals and the atomic structure of minerals. From here the students will look at the general parts that make up the whole. By the time they graduate, they will have discovered the molecules and atoms that are found in each and the purpose of these to help the item to live.

Chalk Talk: Middle School Expectations
When students start middle school, parents find that each of the subject expands on previous learning, however, they each are designed to create a set of references for the students. In the reading programs, students are now discovering the idea of reading to learn as they begin to read more complex material. They may be reading entire chapter books and find that this topic is used in other subjects. Writing is also used in each of the other subject areas. Students begin to write their own stories and write reports about the books that they read. They will be expected to follow the writing process of outline, rough draft, and final product. In math students will be able to complete their education in math facts up to 12. They also become more secure in working with operations. Finally, in science and social studies, they will go further in-depth in previously taught subject matter. In these area, states can vary, but in general they begin to learn about colonial history, as well as research skills. By keeping in touch with the teacher, parents can discover ways to help their children stay on top of each of these areas of education.
