Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lancaster District Curriculum
Language Arts focus on reading, making meaning, and comprehension. Elementary math subjects (kindergarten to Grade 5) build understanding of numbers and operations using numbers, words, and numerals with various strategies. Students learn different ways of representing numbers using different problem solving strategies. In middle school, Language Arts focuses on analyzing literary texts and how change affects students and their world. Students are also taught to apply the language of mathematics to everyday scenarios through algorithms, ratios, algebra and equations and formulas in geometry and measurement.
The high school curricula covers more advanced levels of the above core subjects in relating social issues and philosophical morals such as truth and justice to themes presented in novels and short stories. Math in high school includes subjects in algebra, math, geometry, statistics and pre-calculus with emphasis on completing functions and drawing graphs.

Chalk Talk: Integrating the Arts into Learning
Students focus on core learning in academic areas from kindergarten through high school, and this focus helps prepare them for post-secondary life, but it also requires the addition of other areas of interest, such as the arts, to foster deeper connected thinking. Each subject bears on the arts - nature and artistic form compliment each other nicely and provides a way for many students to understand the processes of nature. Geometry and design lend to each other and can draw in artistically inclined students through that access point. Literature is an art form of its own, and its focus in the curriculum leads in terms of helping students see the world through the arts. In big and little ways, integrating these aesthetic principles into learning can be a major to many students.
