Chalk Talk: How to Write the Body of an Essay

Many essay templates have three paragraphs for the body of an essay. Most of these templates suggest that you state one of your arguments or examples at the beginning of each paragraph. Make sure that you put your strongest argument in the first paragraph, the next strongest argument in the second, and so on. The first sentence should also tie in with the transitional sentence at the end of the paragraph before it and your thesis statement, if possible. You should also be specific when explaining any examples of your main points but try to keep each paragraph within five to seven sentences long. This means that you will need to avoid using unnecessary words or including irrelevant points. When including information about your examples, it is often helpful to the reader if you explain why they are essential to proving your point. Finally, make your last sentence a concluding and/or transition sentence. Tie up any loose ends or give the reader a glimpse into what they will be reading in the next paragraph. Following these tips can help you to write a body of an essay that effectively communicates your point(s) to your reader.
