Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Langford District Curriculum
At the elementary level, the districts provide students with general academic instruction, opportunities to construct their own learning, and knowledge to prepare them for future grade levels. Students have access to foundational courses in mathematics, science, social studies, and English language arts (reading and writing). In addition, learning objectives are intended to prompt students to understand the “how” and “why”, not simply the “what”.
Students in high school can take various courses in the arts, business, English language arts, family and consumer sciences, health, interdisciplinary subjects, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social studies, special education, technology, and world languages. As students progress through grades 8-12, course selection increases to prepare students for post-secondary choices. All students have access to a variety of intervention programs, gifted and talented programs, and character development/prevention programs.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Advisory Committees
One element of outreach and communication between the school district, families, and community members are the Advisory Committees that help advise the district on best policies in specific areas. There is a general School Council that works with the district on a wide range of issues and seeks to provide the best opportunities for all students. There is a Special Education Advisory Committee that works with the districts Special Education team in a supportive manner. There is also a Healthy Schools Committee that gives parents a chance to influence the nutritional, physical education, and wellness policies in the schools. All the committees meet regularly and also seek out ideas and feedback from the community.
